There is a housing shortage in our area and this impacts our economic and social wellbeing. The lack of housing is often hidden, people might be ‘sofa surfing’ or living long term in poor quality housing (such as caravans). People can be forced to move away from the areas because they can’t find anywhere to live here. Lack of housing makes recruitment of staff to public services such as health and education very difficult and this impacts everyone in our communities.
We need hard evidence of the need for more housing to justify investment, and for this reason, with funding from SSE Strathy North Fund, we commissioned and published a Housing Needs Assessment in November 2025. This report is available to download by clicking the button below.
The Housing Needs Assessment highlights the need for additional housing across our area and particularly in the West. We are currently exploring if there is a role for Farr North to help to fulfil these needs.
There are lots of examples of communities taking the lead in local housing development – see resources below for case studies or for a ‘deeper dive’ visit Communities Housing Trust.
